Just sounds like someone's breaking the law and having fun doing it.
Some found it a strange choice for theme song of BE, I don't.

Check the vid on youtube for lyrics if you want. Really gives a feel for the time, but it does sound a bit...weird.

Spotify & Youtube

I've only used youtube links so far and aside from copyright stuff that prevents people from wachting it from their country it works quite well. A bigger problem is the broken-link problem. Therefore I will, in future releases, also try to include a spotify playlist link. I realize that Spotify is not available in all countries yet and I've also noticed it sometimes has strange 'not available in your country' issues but I think it is usefull enough.

What will this mean? I will try for instance to create a complete as possible playlist for the tracks from The Wire and some other posts and add this as a link to the posts. I hope Spotify will keep improving so even less well known music gets included.

I'll also try and update that particular post. Thanks for everyone who's still been commenting on that post. I dó read every comment and try to give an answer. If you've got info I miss, please add it in the comments.

It's been way too long. I've finally decided to reanimate this ánd take some good time digging up info on tracks from The Wire since it's by far the most popular and asked for content.

As a short note on the movie: I liked it. I can enjoy the layered storyline although they could've done a better job at it. The steampunk action scenes were just over the top nazi-zombie raids and attacks on dragons and orcs lead by Spock Prime which is basicly food for 'Awesome!' motivational posters.

Sweet dreams gives the soundtrack a dark and gloomy start.

Army of me
Björk's voice really fits the absurd world they've created and Skunk Anansi gives it a finishing action touch reminding me a bit of of the triphop tracks featured in the Blade Soundtracks (espec. #3).

White rabbit: Some classics shouldn't be touched is something you hear people say often enough, and I sometimes tend to agree, but if you hear Torrini's take on this one, these people are proven wrong.

I want it all/we will rock you
I didn't know the rapper Armageddon but he really manages to make a possibly strange illfitting mix into an awesome raw track. The fact that I didn't cringe when he raps/talks over We will rock you surprised me positively since it's not strange to come across horrible tracks that try make an easy hit by using we will rock you sample.

Search and destroy: Another classic touched in an awesome way. Skin has the voice to make it raw and the band gives it exactly enough agression.

Tomorrow never knows
Never heard of Carla Azar before, but I really like this dreamy sound. Somehow it conjures up an image of a dance in an opium filled room of a harem (I know...crazy).

Where is my mind? I could play this on repeat all day, gloomy rock that sticks.

Asleep: I'm leaving on a jetplane (nót a cover - just reminds me of it), but different. I could fall asleep to this, in a good way.

Love is the drug
Isaac's introduction gives a Moulin Rouge feeling to this track and you've got to love that eastern European accent that Cugino uses in this song. Great trumpets!

This is the best soundtrack I've heard this year. A sign of a good soundtrack is that it fits the movie like a glove and at the same time is able to hold its own, and that's exactly what it does. It contains covers and mixes of some great classic songs and these bands manage not only to nót screw these classics over, but to pull it off! I don't know if there were any songs especially made with this movie in mind, but the selection is gold.

Worldcup soundtracks

I know it's been a while, but I'm starting it up again, even though I'm gone for England in the first 2 weeks of July.

On topic. I came across my old post about the European Championship 2008 and thought that the worldcup 2010 deserved a soundtrack post too.
It's just crazy how a worldcup for a single sport creates such a long list in songs seeing the tournament only lasts a month!

I like this blog far too much to let it die so I'll get some life in here again.
I'm cycling to work for 30 minutes there and 30minutes back again which should allow me to check out some soundtracks and say something semi-usefull about it.

If anyone has a soundtrack they want to know more about, is it good, is it worth clicking play or should I just play the 'leaked' new MJ track.

Ikea

Ha! It's called Soundtracks of whatever overhere so I'm allowed to post this as being the un-official soundtrack for Ikea (next to that I'm allowed to post anything..cause it's my blog).

Jonathan Coultron - Ikea

Like I said it's unofficial, but who cares. It describes every stereotypical concept anyone can have about Ikea in a damn funny way without being too mean about it. It's got a very very catchy rocktune to it so it will stick with you for a while. I'll be going to Ikea again soon (omg they're gonna make the one in my home town the 2nd biggest in Europe!).

I never heard of this guy, but checking out his site I found many many more brilliant songs (e.g. 'Re your brains' and 'Todd the T1000'.) Check them out and when you find a lost $ download them or donate a bit when you rip some of his music. He's even got the lyric and guitar tab info.

The IT-Crowd theme

I've been following this tv-series for quite some time now (their already half-way season 3) but I stepped in at the end of S2.

For info about the tv-serie check the imdb link. But it's basically about the IT department in a big company which sells...well no one knows. After a while they get reinforced by Jen who's hired to manage them. It has a bunch of nerd-stereotypes but in a funny way (no revenge of the nerds humour(somebody tell me which is the English/US spelling!).

Neil Hannon - The It-crowd theme

It's a very simple tune in a good way. It sounds like it has to do with technology and fits the vid perfectly. It's hard to compare with anything but the way they repeat parts of the tune during an episode is almost alike to how they use the shot of the stargate base (SG1) on earth again and again as a moment of coming back to the main story. Brilliantly simple. Adding to this the recognizable error sounds..(and images) makes it one of the best instrumental tunes tv tunes of this moment.

Porno Soundtracks vol. 1

This one should result in interesting google search findings. But that's just what it's called and that's what it is.
Porno Soundtracks by The Forbidden ensemble (link to the cover might not be 100% safe for work, although there's no real nudity)

Over at pornosoundtracks.com they explain it very briefly:
They let three musicians, The forbidden ensemble, watch 70s porn (oh sorry, adult movies) and turn of the sound and see what music they come up with.

Scrolling through the tons of soundtracks I had lying around, this one of course sprang in sight and I really didn't know what to expect (not having seen the website). So I just played everything. First off, there's no moaning or sighing mixed through, so listening ís safe for work, although it might get your hormones pumping.

This 'cd' could be divided into three sets of music: slow sensual tracks, medium tempo tracks and fast tempo 'action' tracks.

The slow sensual tracks like This way please and This is it really set a mood, especially the organ music part of This way please almost gives off a sensual steam. In a track like We have to take some measurements first you almost hear sweat dripping (..I should write soft porn novels or something..).

The medium tempo tracks almost sound like a lead to the action. A track like Of course, this way madam. I want to show you the bathroom first makes you imagine someone coming in to buy a house and you know things will end up differently.

Finally the fast tempo tracks like Please come in, I want to have the master bedroom decorated first and My assistent will take notes sound like the action packed part of the whole set. I divided the music in 3 sets just to make reviewing it a bit more simple, there's no 'slow-medium-fast' order in the tracks though!

The music's pure instrumental but it would make perfect sense as background music for soft porn. I'm not a musician myself but I think the Forbidden ensemble has done a great job making this of this piece of porn for the ears.

Last but not least the titles sound like they are all (I'm pretty damn sure) actual spoken lines from (70s) porn. Which reminded me of a short kind of interlude in Xzibit's Hit & Run II

Merlin (2008) theme

I started watching this after I saw the title pop-up at the CAT tv download calender and I've been pleasantly surprised.

I thought, let's give it a chance and it turned out to be quite a cool tv-series. A friend of mine told me the only thing that's a bit strange is the 'token' black girl Guin(evere) and her dad. I like her (and her dad) as actors in Merlin, but I agree that they are a bit out of place in this story.

About the theme itself: from the first sound on it speaks of lore and epic adventures. A time of knights, romance, wizards and dragons. Without exagurating too much, it's a great theme for Merlin giving your ears a sneakpeak of the series.

True Blood {main theme}

Jace Everett - Bad things

When I first came across the True blood website I didn't really know it was a viral site for the tv-serie True Blood (cause I didn't hear about that one yet).
I've seen the first two episodes now and I think I'm hooked. That put aside, this is a soundtrack/score review site :)
They couldn't have picked a better song for True Blood. The town where it's set is put on screen as a (no offence!) hillbilly town and you meet Sookie who can read peoples' thoughts, and that isn't always a good thing. She can hear everybody's true 'feelings' and so 'hears' when people want to do 'bad things' to her ;) This song fits the town and the things that Sookie experiences. But when a vampire comes into town, she finds out she can't read him..we'll have to see if that's a bad thing. All in all a good tune.

Over There theme

Chris Gerolmo - Over there

There's much more music than only this theme song, but I don't have time for it atm. In the TV-series they let one of the guys act if he just wrote the song and he sings the first couple of lines. Very nice.
I really like this song, because somehow watching the tv series..it doesn't come across as too corny or overdone. A great emotional track with the right message.

Iron Man OST: guestpost with Lee

I have really strong memories of watching the 60s cartoon version of Iron Man, as I got older I started reading the comic book series and so when it finally came time for it to be on the big screen I was really excited. Fortunately the movie was awesome or I think my little fanboy heart would have broken.
As you all know part of what makes a great movie is a great soundtrack.
Thankfully Iron Man manages to deliver on this also, granted with one glaring omission. No Black Sabbath: Iron Man!? It’s featured in the trailer, the game and the closing credits of the movie but does not make an appearance on the CD.

Composer Ramin Djawadi has a relatively small resume but is certainly not a stranger to the super hero movie genre as an assistant composer on Batman Begins and the composer for Blade:Trinity. A lot of this music is very much supplemental material to the film with the Iron Man fanfare sprinkled throughout the music.
I personally think that most movie scores tend to have three or four really strong tracks that epitomise the film’s music and then a bunch of, I don’t want to use the term filler, maybe supporting tracks is best. For those playing at home I recommend Driving With The Top Down, Merchant of Death, Vacation’s Over, Iron Man and Arc Reaktor.

One of the coolest moments for Iron Man fans and what I consider to be a very clever way of tipping one’s hat to the history of the character is the music that is played by the big band in the scene when Stark is to receive an award (and doesn’t show) is a wonderful big band version of the theme from the 60s cartoon. This also showed up later on the movie as another character’s mobile phone ring tone for Stark. I’m reminded of the use of the original Battlestar Galactica theme in the new series as the Colonial anthem.
There are a couple of other tracks on this CD, most notably Institutionalized by Suicidal Tendencies, which is catchy and was featured in Guitar Hero 2. A track by DJ Boborobo that would be just as home on any of the Chill Out albums and finally as a bonus the original cartoon series theme in all its glory (it is also my ringtone).

Most of the tracks can globally be divided in the categories of classics, punk, grimey rap, romantic tracks and the dialogs, and there's the 'other' category.

Classics
Quiet Riot's Metal health starts the movie giving off, a sneakpeak of the action rollercoaster that's about to follow. Nothing to say about this track than that it's a downright rock classic.

Turn me loose is an 80's action packed classic, which would also fit the GTA videogame series.

Achy breaky heart, who doesn't know this..personal feelings aside.., it deserves it's place in this movie with the strange relation of Chev and Eve. A pub classic.

Stayin' alive from The sleeping is a cool rock version where the guitar gives it just a bit more energy than the Beegee's track. Staying alive is exactly what Chev is trying to do.

Punk
The crowd's trix are for kids somehow reminds me of Judy is a punk on crack it's harder and louder but somehow sounds a bit alike.

Bring us bullets also has this energetic punk sound. These tracks fits the energy rush Chev needs to go through.

Kill all the white man is a mix of a relaxed reggae track with a spark of punk half-way through. It's a bit strange though..white guys singing this track ;)

Grimey rap
Bandera: if you could (you probably can) separate the moaning from the track it wouldn't misstand in a porn flick. Next to that it's a grimey latino gangstertrack just like Adrenalina (which looks like it's writen for this movie) and Guasa guasa which fit the latino gang enemies of Chev.

Instrumentals
China town and Does she know? are the instrumental tracks by Paul Haslinger. China town has a weird party sound to it. Does she know? on the other hand has the dark and somber tone that you could also find in the Dexter OST.

Romantic songs
There are some strange semi-romantic scenes in Crank where the next couple of tracks fit like a glove.

'Let's get it on' is actually from a Marvin Gaye tribute cd. It's not Marvin Gaye, but Gerald Levert still gives it that smooth love making touch. That's gotta end up in a certain playlist.

Miracles: a nice romantic background song that will set the mood.
Everybody's talkin' is almost a slowdance song with a tropical teint to it, the only downpoint is that the base sets in a tad to loud.

Meva Juan is a Mexican steaming dance tune which ends as abrubtly as it starts.

Other
Haitian cab ride is an instrumental but could als fit in the grime, it sounds like the cab ride Chev is taking in the movie, dark and grimey and my subwoofer loves it.

New noise: yeah! Hard rock/triphop!!! My neighbours are probably banging on all sides of the appartment now (I'm on the 6th floor). This track gives as much energy as Chev needs in the movie.

Finally there are a whole buch of dialog clips.
I really like how they picked the funny and strange short dialogs from the movie and put them in between the songs. I wouldn't be surprised if some dialogs were inspired by Tarantino. Especially 'Nasal spray'(Nasal spray..wha? Nasal spray, it's got epinephrine in it, it'll get you tweaked man) and 'Hardcore shit' (You take this Haitian shit *...* here This shit right here is some hardcore shit, it's made from plant shit) I've played 'Hardcore shit' around 50 times..this week I guess and it keeps cracking me up.

All in all this soundtrack uses the switching between the dialogs and the songs in a great way to tell the story of Crank.

European Championship 'soundtrack'

Overhere they used Sina's 'Wänn nit jetzt wänn dä' as a kind of soundtrack to the European football analysis' after the games at the program 'Studio sportzomer'.

It took a while (till after the Dutch got kicked out of the tourney) to find out how this track was called and by whom it was sung.
I like it very much, cause it has this sensual summer feeling to it. It sounds a líttle bit sad, but still it lightens my spirit. Does anyone know which language it is in? Cause it lóoks like German, it sounds almost Frysian (language cq dialect from overhere) but I guess it's a Swiss or German dialect..or...Reto-Romanic..don't know anything about that language..

The official track for the EC 2008 was this one though:
One night only - Just for tonight

Has a real emotional 'this is the big important match' feeling to it. I like it.
As for the whole feeling for this championship Switzerland and Austria did a great job. I liked the mascottes, the music and the enormous amount of football crazed emotional people.

I just feel a bit sad that we're not in the tourney anymore...

Juno OST

All I want is you A typical 'we belong together' - 'I'm the X to your Y' love song, country style.

After the first track Kimya Dawson picks up and because she is good for 7 (2 partly) of the 19 tracks on the soundtrack, I'll group her songs together.

The lyrics of Tire swing 'Joey never met a bike that he didn't want to ride, I never met a Toby I didn't like' made me laugh. I don't know if 'a Toby' also has such a double meaning as 'a bike' but it's funny nonetheless. Next to being funny I like the multiple voices joining in end dropping out eventually ending up in a canon.

Loose lips also cracked me up with lines like 'We won't stop untill somebody calls the cops, and even then we'll start again and just pretend that nothing ever happened'. I just love funny songs and the fast pace in this track is cool too, but Kimya sometimes almost stumbles through the lyrics and with the others joining in it sometimes sounds like a fast birthday song sung by a random group of people.

So nice so smart and Tree hugger both fall in the funny category. You should really check out the video that was made for Tree hugger.

Anyone else but you by the Moldy Peaches (half of which is Kimya) it's the same song as the last track. The Moldy peaches just give a strange funny sound to it.

Rollercoaster is not a real song but it's singing a song without lyrics..just 'tududududududu-ing' to the music, can't count the times I do this.
Sleep is a short sleepingtune being hummed. Too short to say anything really useful.

In the tracks that are actually sung by Kimya, her singing sometimes sounds a bit false, but in a strange way it fits the songs.

The Kinks' A well respected man has the 60s feeling that fits the movie. The movie is 'set' in the present but Juno gives a 60s swing to it. I didn't know The Kinks, but I'm going to play this track a lot more often.

Buddy Holly's Dearest is a bit too mushy for my taste. It just drips with being in love, especially the 'uhmmmya' part. Superstar and Sea of love also belong in this (although a bit less dripping) category of mushy love songs.

Up the spout composed by Mateo Messina (also the composer of the score) has the same sound as the tracks by Kimya Dawson which isn't surprising because he also based the score on her music.

The tracks from Belle and Sebastian Piazza, New York catcher and Expectations are both very relaxt songs, but try to explain the crazy lyrics from the Piazza song to me..they're just plain crazy.

All the young dudes was written by David Bowie and it sounds like a Bowie track (say 'Life on mars'). I like it.

I'm sticking with you (cause I'm made out of glue) is a simple but brilliantly funny love song.

Vampire another funny song by Antsy Pantsy.

Anyone else but you by Michael Cera and Ellen page is the closing song to this soundtrack and to the movie is a nice sweet duet from the main characters in the movie.

Listening to this soundtrack makes you want to listen to it again. It sometimes is sugarry sweet, but that's survivable. Next to that you should also listen to the lyrics really well, I like funny tracks and some of the tracks are definitely funny. I looked up some information about Kimya Dawson which says she makes so called 'anti-folk' music, which makes fun of too serious music, and of itself. I think this is thé reason they choose so many of her songs because Juno has this same attitude for the biggest part of the movie 'seriously' joking around about the whole adoption.

Transformers OST

I díd see the movie (stupid thing is..in Dutch the word is 'film' but switching to English I can't get used to choosing for 'film') twice, but can't recall for which scene which track is used for each track, only that some are just played during the credits. For me the soundtrack is a mix of well known (LP incl. Mike Shinoda, Smashing Pumpkins, Disturbed, Goo Goo Dolls) and completely unknown (hard)rock bands, I only knew HIM by name.

Linkin Park's 'What I've done' is quite different than I was used to from LP, but I feel people shouldn't hate it just because it's different from what they are used to from LP. It fits the movie well with the kind of softer LP sound.

The Smashing Pumpkins, Disturbed and HIM make me really turn up the speakers. These tracks are just the industrial rock sound that the transformers needed. Saw both the Smashing Pumpkins and Disturbed live btw, if you ever get the chance..don't miss them, especially Disturbed.

I like the track from the Goo Goo Dolls, but you've got to be in the mood for it..it's a tad bit tooo mushy/romantic even for Sam & Mikaela.

The used's 'Pretty handsome awkward' and Taking back sunday's 'What it feels like to be a ghost are great! I'm quite looking forward to it if they would show up on a festival overhere. I like their mix of punkrock. Taking a look at the comments on youtube you will see a lot of 'emo'-hate..but that's just sad. So, maybe it sounds a bit 'emo' (hate the word) but I think that both tracks are great.

Styles of beyond & Mike Shinoda made a good bragging and boasting track which fits the attitude of soundwave. Love it.

Retina and the sky
Strange thing about this track is that at first I thought my boxes were broken, it sounded like plastic bits were bouncing through the insides, but's part of the track and I like it. End of the world has a similar sound with an addictive soft-rock sound.

Julien K's Technical difficulties has a exactly the electrical sound to it that you would expect to be used in a movie about big talking robots (..not in a negative way, but that's what transformers are).

What can I say about the Transformers theme, I'm still addicted to the old one (see below) and I like that one faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar better.

All in all I like the soundtrack. The only thing is that in my (just bitching) opinion a modern Transformer movie shouldn't include too much drama and therefor more of the industrial rock music like 'This moment', 'Doomsday clock' and 'Passion on the killing floor'. But I guess that's 'hollywood'.

I was listening to the Blue Öyster Cult's 'Stairway to the stars' :

And while listening something kept buzzing me ..it's sounds a bit alike Steppenwolf's 'Born to be wild' somehow:

Is this waaaaaaaaaaaay old news, am I completely wrong..or do they have a sample (although used in a different way) in common: the guitarrifs.

While searching..I even came across the BOC's version of Born to be wild:

I'm from a different era so: enlighten me.
Not going to post any question about this on the vid responses because I know there are a bunch of fanboys out there who are just dying to scream how young they were when they started listening to this music and how cool that makes em (hear the sarcasm).

Dexter the score (tv series, not Dexter's lab)

There are 2 versions, the soundtrack and the score. Apparently I got the score, but the soundtrack and the score seem to overlap.

A very small synopsis snapped from tv.com:
'Based on Jeff Lindsay's novels Darkly Dreaming Dexter and Dearly Devoted Dexter this crime thriller follows Dexter Morgan. Dexter is a forensic blood spatter expert for the Miami Dade Police Department. He is the main support for his sister. He has a steady girlfriend, with two kids who adore him. He also has an active "night life". Based on a code instilled in him by his foster father, Harry, he hunts down people who have escaped justice and makes sure they don't get away with a crime again.'

About the music:
Most tracks can be put into different categories which make the score into a whole.

Eerie
Tracks like Opening, Wink, Escalate, End credit and House sound sinister and dark. These are sounds which give me the eerie feeling that fit Dexter as a 'good' serial killer.

Sadness
Next to the whole 'good' vs 'bad' question there's a feeling of sadness about Dexter because he has to hide his true nature. Epilogue has a Spanish sound with a half-hearted happyness to it and Party sounds a bit alike. It reminds me of the adds for depressed people who don't know 'where the fun is in a party'. Hidden falls in the same category with almost Western-like sounds with a Spanish twist of sadness.

Drama
There are a couple of tracks which describe downright drama like Need time, Changed, Deb Cries, New legs and Funny. Photo which is one of my favorites also fits this category. It just speaks drama. I love how you hear the shifting of the guitar players hand on the guitar (don't know how this is called).

Action/tension
Working for the police and being a serial killer at the same time brings tension and action which can be heard very well in Ending, Shipyard and Fight.

Can't hide falls in between 'action/tension' and 'strangely normal' with tense xylophone plinging switching to 'a day like every day' guitar sound.

Subwoofer darkness
Connections and Match make me happy with my subwoofer. A deep bass rumble describing darkness.

Strangely normal
Harry's rule sounds like a routine day in the life of a hidden killer, a walk in the park (Harry was Dexter's dad who taught him the craft). And so does
The Dexter Theme: watch (and listen to) it first.

Everything you see insinuates Dexter's real life: killing. The track sounds like a normal day of a normal person but you can almost hear there's more to it.

Overall:
The tv series has a very dark feeling to it. Most sane people will have moments when they think..'somebody should kill that criminal because the justice system failed'. Dexter does exactly thát. We know it's wrong but in the dark corners of our mind are glad someone does the dirty job. Daniel Licht did a great job composing music which captures that feeling and Rolfe Kent made a perfect theme. If you like soundtrack/score music, this one is a must!

Next to listening to the butload of tracks (for instance in the The Wire update) you can also record them. I've been doing this for a while with Audacity (google it, find it). The only problem I have is that it seems like the tracks need volume levelling to be louder.

Does anyone have a good alternative for Audacity (because I really like how dead-simple it works!). Or know a good (read: simple) program to do the volume levelling so if I burn tracks to a cd, I won't jump up everytime a far to quiet song is followed by a normal, and therefor without turning the volume down far too loud track.

To all the people who come by via the HBO boards or via google searches, be nice, leave a comment. You don't need a blogger account to leave a message.

The review setup will be a bit different than I used to do, still linking to youtubes though, see tracklist!

Film synopsis:
The film is about a guy who works for the tabacco industry as a spokes- and salesman. To be short it comes down to him being so good at it that he can, as a matter of speech, sell cigarettes to someone with astma or lungcancer. In debates about the risks of smoking he always ends up with the croud on his side. Down the line he starts changing his view on his job.

Soundtrack
There are a couple of things I really like about this soundtrack.
1: I heard a great deal of songs from artists I didn't knew (eg. The Kingston Trio) or only knew by name (eg. Otis redding) which gave me a reason to search for more of their music.

2: Tracks on a soundtrack should really fít a film. Almost all the tracks (excl. the instrumentals and Greenback dollar) are related to smoking/cigarettes or trying to quit (Another puff).

3: Humor, that is, in a humoristic film a part of the soundtrack should be humoristic. Listening to the lyrics of 'Smoke smoke smoke that cigarette', 'Cigarettes & whiskey' and 'Another puff' made me laugh out loud the first time I heard them, and still do.

4: Nice instrumentals. I already knew Rolfe Kent from some other soundtracks and also liked the tracks on this soundtrack. These tracks give a good sphere to the film. The only bit of a downside was that 'Intro & tobacco one' and Spanish Epilogue reviseted (halfway) sound a bit alike.

5: The soundtrack made me listen to music I don't normally listen to, and broaden my taste a bit. You won't find tracks like 'little organ fugue', 'smoke gets in your eyes' and 'Three cigarettes in an ashtray' in my daily playlist because it's not really my kind of day-to-day music. They are oldies and with oldies I mean really oldies, for instance 'Smoke rings' is from 1933! They have a slow and old sound to them. But while playing the entire cd I dó like the music.

6: As a last thing I think what makes a good soundtrack is that it enhances the feel of whatever the soundtrack was 'made' for but also stands out so that I think 'I should really get this soundtrack' instead of being completely invisible.

Conclusion:
Watching the movie I immediately liked 'greenback dollar' and 'smoke smoke smoke that cigarette' which made me search for the OST. Untill I heard 'Cigarettes and coffee' Otis Redding was one of those 'legends' I only knew by name and I found out that the Kingston Trio has been busy for more than my lifespan making great music. I listened to the soundtrack and réally laughed out loud hearing Tex Williams complain about people pausing litteraly éverything they were doing to just smoke a cigarette before continueing and Jerry Reed telling a tale about trying to quit smoking which left me with his phrase 'Boo on cigarettes'(I'm exchanging 'cigarettes' with whatever's relevant). The instrumentals, although sometimes a bit alike are all really nice. And listening to the songs which aren't really my kind of music on day-to-day basis in the playlist of the soundtrack itself, made me like them enough to keep pressing play now and then when I'm in the mood.

The Life Aquatic OST

I saw the movie and had a great laugh. I might have seen it before but can't remember all that well.
Somehow I've been able to find a link to every track on this cd so you can listen for yourself.
The links only link to original music video's, but it's the music that counts.

1. Sven Libaek - Shark Attack Theme
It's not called shark attack theme for nothing. The track sounds a bit slow but you can almost hear (see) a shark coming at you slowly with it's vin above the water, ready to attack. That'll be a jaguar shark.

2. Mark Mothersbaugh - Loquasto International Film Festival
This really music really made me happy, it just sounds like a walk on a sunny day on which no bad things can happen. In the movie it plays on the film festival showing all the important people getting introduced to eachother and and Zissou is obviously bored.

3. David Bowie - Life On Mars?
Sounds dramatic from the start, questioning the intelligence of life on earth.
It somehow made me think of a drowsy christmas day.

4. Seu Jorge - Starman A cover of David Bowie's (that is, his alter-ego Ziggy Stardust) Starman. I don't know any Portuguese, nor do I know the 'original' but Seu Jorge has a nice calm voice and I like the raw accoustic guitar.

5. Mark Mothersbaugh - Let Me Tell You About My Boat
Zissou's boat that is. A cheerful instrumental with all kinds of instruments from flutes to guitars etc.

6. Seu Jorge - Rebel Rebel
Another Bowie cover. Seu Jorge relaxes the songs. You can play these tracks on the beach with a camp fire.

7. Mark Mothersbaugh - Zissou Society Blue Star Cadets/Ned's Theme (take 1)

8. Devo - Gut Feeling
There are a lot of moments where you expect someone to start singing, but it's a 2 minute instrumbental before the singer from Devo begins; which I found out after thinking it sounded like The Cure, is Mark Mothersbaugh *see end comment*. Sometimes you hear a track and you immediately like it, this is one of those for me.
On a sidenote: this track was first combined with 'Slap Your Mammy' but later on the split it up. I'm not sure if this is the split-up version but I guess so.

9. Sven Libaek - Open Sea Theme
A theme for open sea..what's in a name.

10. Seu Jorge - Rock 'n' Roll Suicide (just click play)
A Bowie cover like the other songs by Jorge on this cd. The Bowie track (I guess Jorge adjusted it a bit towards the movie again) seems to be about someone who is to old to be a rock n rollstar. Zissou seems to old to be hunting for his so called jaguar shark. Seu's voice makes the song even more sad than Bowie's version.

11. Joan Baez - Here's To You
Originally for the soundtrack of Sacco e Vanzetti, the music was composed by Enrico Moricone which I presume you know if you ever saw a decent Western. This woman has been making music for 50!! years. And this track shows why she apparently is able to live from it.

12. Mark Mothersbaugh - We Call Them Pirates Out Here (in the playlist of a podcast)
Arrr erm...I like titles which are funny and directly relate to the content of the movie or whatever (other funny titles see Lost)

13. Iggy & The Stooges - Search And Destroy
This track (punk)rocks! I think Blur has a related sound which I like. I don't know if they covered this track (at least not with a direct copy of the title).

14. Paco De Lucia - La Nina De Puerta Oscura (at least half of the track)
A nice piece of Spanish castagnette music, or they are clapping.
I might make a cd with more of alike music as background music for a nice dinner or so ;)

15. Seu Jorge- Life On Mars?
Another nice Bowie cover.

16. Mark Mothersbaugh - Ping Island/Lightning Strike Rescue Op
It's like the Shark attack's theme, a real theme. You could have replaced the sound of Zissou and his men running up Ping Island for a rescue operation with this track and it would fit like a glove.

17. Seu Jorge - Five Years (just click play)

18. Scott Walker - 30 Century Man
I'd choose to be a giant. A nice guitar song ending in a 'music box' piece, I can't remember if there was a music box in the movie..

19. Zombies - Way I Feel Inside
It sounds a bit too much like a sleeping song to me for a 'I'm going to spill my feelings track'.

20. David Bowie - Queen Bitch
After all Jorge's covers, a second original Bowie track. It immediately made me want to move around. I like this side of Bowie a bit better than Life on Mars.

I liked Mark Mothersbaugh's music on the RTB ost.
I didn't know he was one of the founders of the band Devo and thought it sounded a bit like The Cure (say 'boys don't cry') and thought that the singer might have something to do with it..but they just appeared from the same period (late 70s). That was quite a surprise for me. All his tracks on this cd are just right, not too short (that is to say something about it) and not too long (where you might get bored).

All songs by Seu Jorge were covers of David Bowie songs according to wikipedia the lyrics where sometimes changed to fit the movie, nice, but as said before I don't speak Portuguese. That doesn't make the music less beautiful. He makes relaxed campfire-on-the-beach versions from them. There is also another soundtrack that is composed of 5 tracks that feature the official soundtrack and other David Bowie covers that were taken out of the movie, but re-recorded as a studio session.

I also liked almost all the other tracks by the other artists discovering 'new' artists is one of the things I like about soundtracks.

I might make some small posts in the meanwhile. Ideas on which soundtrack(s) should be next are always welcome.

The Royal Tenenbaums OST

First of all: check this link to Amazon for 30secs of each track, that is, some tracks don't even last that long.

2nd: watched the movie in Italian (yay for Dutch subtitling), it somehow sounded natural, but I might have missed a joke or two. Now and then I'll refer to scenes in the movie, of course you can listen to the music without seeing the movie, but it ís a soundtrack which just gives it a bit extra meaning now and then.

Tracks (artist first then tracktitle)

1. Mark Mothersbaugh - 111 Arthur Avenue
111 Arthur Avenue: the address of the Tenenbaums.
It starts with a magical fairy tale intro and changes into a kind of an happy interlude between scenes.

2. Nico - These days
She sings that she doesn't talk much these days because she's busy reminiscing about the past and missed opportunities, things he could or should have done. They play the track when Richie returns home and meets Margot again, maybe symbolizing the time that they could have spent seeing eachother. The track has a slow melodic sound to it, the scene is a bit in slowmotion.
Strange thing is, the track could also (if not better) fit the character of Royal because the movie is about how he's making up for the times he wasn't there for the family (well..in his own way).

3. Ysaye Quartet - String quartet in F Major (2nd movement) (Ravel)
It sounds like mice tripling over string instruments. Happy tripling music.

4. Paul Simon - Me and Julio down by the schoolyard
It's a song about how a boy get's caught doing things with Julio which are 'against the lahaaaw', but sounds like a memory of good times. In the movie it's used when Royal and his 2 grandsons are in town doing all sorts of mischief.

5. The Mutato Muzika Orchestra - Sonata for cello & piano in F Minor (Enescu) This piece speaks: somethings happening! It sounds like a classical jamsession, which is quite cool because now and then it is like a switch is pulled changing it entirely. But 7.16 minutes is just a bit too long for me.

6. Bob Dylan - Wigwam
Lyrics like 'ladida' always make for good tracks, without being sarcastic this track sounds just funny and makes me happy. For the ones who've seen the movie (of will see it) they play it during a conversation between Etheline and Henry, damn funny.

7. Mark Mothersbaugh - Look at that old grizzly bear
The old grizzly bear must be Royal Tenenbaum. A short and happy piece of music.

8. John Lennon - Look at me
An emotional guitar song about love and doubt. In the movie it might symbolize the love of Chas for his 2 sons (funnies thing is that they constantly wear the same training suites).

9. Emitt Rhodes - Lullabye
The link is not actually Emitt Rhodes, but the guy in the vid does a fairly good job.
Not much to say about this track then that it's a short but good lullaby, if you've got a crybaby..this should definitely work, not meaning that it's a boring track.

10. Mark Mothersbaugh - Mothersbaugh's canon
A peaceful background tune.

11. The Clash - Police And Thieves
Just like the track by the Ramones (see below) a punk song, but much more peaceful. It has a nice kind of reggae twist in it.

12. Mark Mothersbaugh - Scrapping & Yelling
A home video, but well it uses 'scrapping and yelling' as background music. A peaceful happy piece of music.

13. The Ramones - Judy Is A Punk
In the movie you see short scenes of Margot's life, kissing men on practically every corner of the planet. Really living a wild life. 'Judy is a punk' sounds like it was written for her. A very cool punk track! If you don't know the Ramones, this is a good first encounter (it was for me!).

14. Mark Mothersbaugh - Pagoda's Theme
Strangely this just sounds like it was not finished, 21 seconds is just very very short, if not too short.

15. Elliott Smith - Needle In The Hay
'He's acting dumb, that's what you've come..to expect'. Without spoiling the movie, Richie does something very stupid. The track is about how you sometimes do stupid things which no one understands even though they think they do.

16. Nick Drake - Fly
An emotional request for a second chance sung with an almost hoarse voice. Very beautiful.

17. Mark Mothersbaugh - I Always Wanted To Be A Tenenbaum
Ali Cash, always wanted to be a Tenenbaum, but he was just the kid next door. A kinda sad story with a somewhat sad tune.

18. Vince Guaraldi Trio - Christmas Time Is Here
Again..not a link to the actual track, but well next best thing (or go to the amazon link).
First reaction: it's not christmas yet!!, always hate those things out-of-season. But it's a very nice edition of this christmas song. You can almost see kids singing it outside a door with snow (and a piano hehe) in the background.

19. The Velvet Underground - Stephanie Says
This song sóunds like it's about freedom, questioning why other people want to hold you down. Good lyrics and a melodical sound.

20. Mark Mothersbaugh - Rachel Evans Tenenbaum (1965-2000)
Rachel is the late-wife of Chas and mother of Ari & Uzi. Sounds a bit like a funeral tune, not strange, because Rachel is dead and the Tenenbaums regulary visit her grave. But it also has a happy ring to it (good memories probably).

21. Mark Mothersbaugh - Sparkplug Minuet
The 'oohoohooohooo' in the background really makes me think of 'christmas taaaaaaiiime' which turns on the 'it's not christmas time alarm again' but next to that it's peaceful background music.

22. Nico - The Fairest Of The Seasons
The second song from Nico, with the same soft voice singing 'do I stay or should I go' it sounds like she's really thinking it trough by the slow and soft way of the song.

23. The Mutato Muzika Orchestra - Hey Jude
I knew the 'Hey Jude' version of the beatles (also the one linked) and liked it from the first time I had to sing it (middle school..being about 12 yrs old) but found the lyrics (take a sad song..to make it better) a real WTF, still do. The MM Orchestra do a very cool orchestral version of it.

Summary:
As you've probably noticed, some songs got more words than others. I've had almost no musical education whatsoever when it comes to (classical) music. Can't read notes more than the most basic stuff and have only a very very basic idea of things like 'minor - major' let alone 'F major' etc. This means I can't say much about this, which is maybe a bit sad, but can't help it for the time being. Next to that I never was a big classical music fan, but slowly I begin to appreciate some stuff.

The music in The Royal Tenenbaums creates a melodramatic atmosphere with happy and sad moments. Tracks/pieces of music which light up the happy moments and music which point out to the sad/dramatic things or 'could have beens'. A very good soundtrack which fits the movie like a glove!
Mark Mothersbaugh who 'created' the instrumental pieces did a good job!

Final statement:

Casshern OST (cd 1 )

Searching on amazon.com seems to tell me I might not have 'the original soundtrack' or 'the complete soundtrack' as they call it.. But the cd's I've got definitely belong to the Casshern movie. The review is about the 1st cd. Maybe I'll do the 2nd (instrumental cd) another time.
I've put links down so you can listen to the tracks. Most are youtubes, some are from a Japanese(?) version of myspace. On the latter, after a while a 'you have to login to listen to this' message appears..just ignore it :)

1 Shiina Ringo - Kuki

This song has a J-pop(py) sound to it. The typical Japanese-English lyrics exchanging eachother. But where some of the J-pop music sounds too childish for my ears and maybe even 'cheap'this track has more to it. After listening to it a couple of times you'll be whistling along.

2 Mondo Grosso - Like no one's looking

In a couple of words: funky, techno, robotic, industrial track. Don't listen to it while driving...it will make you break the speed limit.

3 Hyde - Masquerade
starts at 37secs
This track has a good rock sound to it, starting of like a track where you know there's soon gonna be a point where it loudens. With 'loudens' I mean the point where you get the feeling it has that aggressive strike point where you want start jumping.
As far as the English part goes, this track is about that nothing is what it seems, it's all a masquerade.

4 Towa Tei - Original Human

I didn't réally like this song. The violin's almost sound false, but on purpose. It does have a funny way of substituting for lyrics by using loose sentences which sound like they are plucked from a phone call or conversation, but only from one guy.
Listen and you'll see what I mean.

5 Acid Man - Suisha

It almost has a easy listening jazzy sound to it, but then with a rocky twist.
I don't know what he's singing about, but it sounds dramatic.

6 Shiro Sagisu & Satoshi Tomiie - Pluriel
Ignore the warhammer talk and listen to the track ;)
Strange thing is that I've listened to this soundtrack lots and lots of times but only really found out this track is actually an instrumental.
This track can be divided into bits. An peaceful intro, switching to a kind of Mission Impossible sound (theme), action packed. After a while it switches again to the peaceful part, and back to the MI theme style. The track ends a bit abrubtly.

7 Onitsuka Chihiro - Borderline

This is in my opinion one of thé best tracks. Onitsuka has a voice that gives me goosebumps. Like more tracks on this cd, it's part English, part Japanese. The English has quite an accent to it and the pronounciation is not always right. But somehow this is nót a negative part of the song. It just strenghtens the drama this track brings.

8 Back Horn - Requiem
the vid is for batman, but it's the song that counts
A very impressive requiem to Casshern. Right from the start it shakes out of the trance left by 'Borderline' . It's a requiem to battle. Oh and I had this for a ringtone, which startled people.

9 Glay - Mugen no deja vu kara
Needs Imeem loginOne of the first words I wrote down about this track is 'peaceful' after finding the link above I found out I'm not alone. A peaceful almost happy sounding song.

10 Utada Hikaru - Dakera no negai ga kanau koro

It sounds like it's about loss and pain. And after checking the lyrics, that's almost exactly what it's about. Missing someone, longing for that someone but not being able to see eachother ever again.

I feel bad that my Japanese is not more than being able to count to 100, and the occasional greeting or martial arts term (and curse I learned through Anime). That means a part of the meaning of songs get lost to me, but the English parts and the music itself make up for that. I saw the movie a couple of years ago and ran around torrent sites long enough to find it eventually. If able, I might use the 'listen link' idea more often.

The movie is a strange mix of anime and reality in a fictious world. The soundtrack fits very well with a mix of sometimes dramatic, sometimes action packed and sometimes just plain 'strange' tracks. I guess most of the music on this cd has to be kinda up your alley, but then again I didn't know the music before seeing the movie and instantly got hooked. Seeing the movie gives you an extra feel to the music. So go rent/download/buy it!

Final statement:
Not enough people know this cd, but I know it visits my cd player often.

Casshern OST cd 1

For those who do not know the movie (which isn't strange at all) here's a brief summary written by Claudio Carvalho (some Brazillian dude who wrote it on the imdb site).

In the future, in a polluted post-apocalyptic society called Eurasia after a war against Europe, the planet is devastated by the effect of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. The geneticist Dr. Azuma (Akira Terao) develops a technique called "neo-cell", capable of regenerating the body of human beings, sponsored by an evil corporation. His son Tetsuya Azuma (Yusuke Iseya) dies in the war, but after an accident in the laboratory of Dr. Azuma, Tetsuya revives as the powerful warrior Casshern, while a new breed of mutants called "neo-humans" is generated in the plant. The neo-humans decide to annihilate the humans and raise a new world.

It's an Japanese movie in a sort of anime-reality mix. Either you like it or you hate it. I thought the movie was very cool, although some dramatic parts were a bit long. But I'm not here to write a movie review, so on to the music!

The OST excists out of 2 cd's. The first cd consists of 'normal' tracks and the other is an 100% instrumental soundtrack.

WIP...I wanted to post it last week, but the cd's were at my parents' house...So coming soon (probably this week).

Veronica Guerin OST (finally!)

It took a damn while ..guess real life tries to take too much time sometimes. I’ll try and update more regularly. Most nrs on this cd can’t really be called songs, cause there’s no singing, just music so they’ll be called tracks.

1 Sinead O’Connor: One more day
She uses her strong voice as always in a way so that you can almost see, feel and touch Ireland. The song tells that there will always be one more day. It gives hope.

2 Dublin 1996: the year when the whole thing happened. The track has a bit of a sinister sound to it, something’s gonna happen and it isn’t a good thing.

3 Driving
This one could have been a song of an Irish folklore dancing group. It really has a happy spark to it making you want to dance around like a folk dancer. It ends as quick as it begins, just like the happy moments in the movie.

4: Preparations
It starts off with dark almost industrial sounds which swell louder and louder until a quick beat comes in and with it the track fades.

5: The killing
A sad sounding track. It’s hard to describe but you just feel it’s about someone’s death. A lingering sad sound (sounds like a violin and a flute ..but I guess I’ve missed out on music classes in my younger years :S ) which in the end slowly fades.
Reference to the movie: Veronica get’s killed.

6 Research
A busy track. It sounds a bit like ‘Driving’ but with more sounds in it. And very very short.

7 Traynor lies
Really emotional sounds with quite an up tempo beat to it which tells there is something that has happened or is going to happen and like most things in the movie, those things aren’t good.

8 The beating
The music makes it sound like a terrible thing has happened..(the tinkling) but it ended alright, she survived.
Reference to the movie: Guess who gets it.

9 Conversations
Drama. That’s the best word for the beginning of this track. Suddenly it opens up into a bit of folk/ Clannad style music fastening the pace.
Like more of the tracks on this cd, it ends very suddenly.

Reference to the movie: In the movie Veronica had difficult conversations with her husband about her dangerous work especially after the attacks on her.

10 First warning
Damn..the first sound of this track made me jump off my chair, that’s a warning!
A short track with sinister sounds.

Reference to the movie: Veronica get’s a ‘warning’ that she shouldn’t stick her nose where it doesn’t belong (according to the criminals of course).

11 Brian O’Donnel: Bad news
A young boy sings this one. And not to suck up to myself, but my English is quite good but I had a hard time following what he sung half of the time. The first part is sung acapella very very beautiful. The music gets stronger and stronger but without sounding so loud that you can’t hear the kid singing. After 3 minutes the singing stops and emotional sounds take over.

12 Second warning
A bit of the same start off as the first warning but I guess I was more prepared. A drama which also ends well even though Veronica survives barely (for now).

13 Deceit
Dark industrial sounds which creep up your skin. Like walking alone in a dark place where danger’s lurking and happening without you knowing.. yet.

14 Never show your fear.
It opens with almost happy twinkling sounds. I think the composer of the OST looked for a track which could describe the braveness of Veronica which ends sad.

Reference to the movie: Veronica’s scared as hell but she never shows it to her enemies and continues the fight even though she’s been threatened and beaten.

15 Sinead O’Connor : The funeral
This is how it ends. The criminal mastermind is behind bars, but Veronica gets killed for it nonetheless. A simple hit and run. It gives the end an almost ‘acquiescent’ sound, it would have ended this way anyhow.

Oversight: The soundtrack gives a good sound to the movie. There are a lot of dark moments in the movie with only short bursts of happiness (Driving, Research). There are only a couple of tracks in which song takes a place. Both Sinead O’Connor tracks and the Brian O’Donnel’s ‘Bad news’ . The music makes you feel like you were there, right in Ireland following the story step by step until the sad ending.

Other music you might like if you liked this OST:
- some Nelly Furtado (yes some of her songs on Whoa Nelly and Folklore have a like sound).
- Sinead O’Connor (what’s there not to like!!)
- Riverdance
- Irish folk music
- Clannad (and alike).

Veronica Mars ost

Yes..I'm addicted to tv series..sue me.

So Veronica Mars is yet another great tv series that is not on tv overseas (not in The Netherlands at least).
They've just started the 3rd season and it's still going strong.
I'll be reviewing the soundtrack per song..and then add a comment on the whole.
By reviewing, I will not just look at the music itself..but maybe even more if it really FITS into the movie/series. Because I think that is one of the most important things for a soundtrack.

1. We Used to Be Friends - The dandy warhols
This is the tv series theme. The series is about a girl (Veronica)who's dad is the town's sherrif but get's sacked after everybody thinks he fuckes up at a murdercase (blaming the richest man in town). After getting sacked, they off course lose a lot of friends who turn their backs on them.
So the entire song makes sense.
Next to that it is a very relaxt song with a bit of a spunk to it. Just like Veronica. She's a very nice girl..with spunk.

2. I Hear the Bells - Mike Doughty
A typical feel-good song. He sings about hearing bells ringing joyfull and about early

3. I Know I Know I Know - Tegan & Sarah
A sweet song about everlasting love, untill the relation ends because the lovers drift apart. But they will always love eachother anyway.
It has a sweetish sound to it..but it's not going so far as to sound irritating (like when I hear 'kiss me' by sixpence none the richer to often)

4. I Turn My Camera On - Spoon
After her dad get's sacked as the sherrif he starts up a private detective office.
He's darn good at it and because he can't do everything alone, Veronica does her part taking 'money-shots' with her camera whenever there is something that needs to be found out.
It has a bit of a white stripes sound to it. An easy drum that sticks in your ear.

5. No Sleep Tonight - The Faders
Try figuring out the meaning of this one ;)
A bit of a girlpunk song about someone who won't get any sleep tonight because the person in the song is madly in love and wants to get it on. Veronica falls in love with someone quite bad. (won't spoile it if you haven't watched the series yet..WHY NOT!!)

6. Dakota - Stereophonics
Right from the start it sounds like a Stereophonics song. Can't explain it..it just does. And that's a good thing. A bit more speed in this song than in the previous songs (on the OST). I'll still have to find out why it's called 'Dakota' but it is about your girlfriend making you feel like you're the one for her. Maybe a bit of a sweet subject. But the stereophonics make it 'rocky'.

7. Sway - The Perishers
'I don't want to hurt you, I don't want to make you sway' That's the main line in this song.
A broken love..staying true friends.

8. Long Time Coming - Delays
Like a lot of bands..I didn't knew Delays. But they make a darn good song on this soundtrack. They easily deserve to tour with Stereophonics. If they would bring out some more songs overhere and go to Amsterdam's Paradiso..I'd visit!
I don't réally like to compare bands..but they could be named alongside Stereophonics..but they still have their own sound.

9. On Your Porch - The Format
A boy sings a song about loving a girl and some problems with his dad being very sick which was a very hard time.
The song has a bit of melodrama to it. It leaves a strange mix of sadness and resignation (when you know there's nothing more you can do..it's good enough, you've tried hard). Not exactly really fitting in with the series by subject of the song..but it does represent the feelings.

10. Ocean City Girl - Ivy
A bit of a lounge track. Put it in a placelist with Air. It's just a little bit louder but you could almost picture the things in the song.
It's about that nothing can hurt the girl that got killed anymore. It's all good now.
Or at least that's what I feel listening to the song.

11. Momentary Thing - Something happens
Nothing lasts forever. 'It' was just a momentary thing but it was great while it lasted. Easy going song..untill the refrain kicks in! You may even jump a bit to this song! 'but after all..isn't this just a momentary thing!'

12. Way You Are - 46bliss
Put yourself..put yourself in my place. Trying to describe the feelings of different persons towards eachother. Try to see things how somebody else sees them for once.
And about staying yourself. A bit more noise than would be expected from this theme.

13. Lost & Found - Adrienne Pierce
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw love finding & losing it.
Nothing more to say about this one.

14. Lily Dreams On - Cotton Mather
Lily is the person (girl) that was killed. She was the best friend of Veronica.
She 'talks' to Veronica in her dreams. Lily herself always was a dreamer. So the song 'Lily dreams on' fits perfectly. This guy has a strange nice sounding accent. A bit of a slow 'gitar-plucking' song.

After writing the 'per-song' thing it sounds like the soundtrack is filled with songs about sweet romantic songs. But it just has a bit more rock to it. The songs emulate the emotions of love and confusion that Veronica has during the episodes.
Confusion about not knowing who murdered her best friend and about not fitting in in her old group of friends any more. And love for.....go find out!

The songs are mainly feel-good or feel-sad rock songs. But most of the time they just that bit extra to the songs to not make them corny. With a couple of big(ger) artists on the soundtrack I was surprised not to hear any of the songs on radio.
The Dandy warhols or Stereophonics could have made a big hit out of their attribution.

You can listen samples on Amazone or alike sites. And go go go watch that series. It's brilliant! Maybe the first 5 minutes make you think you're watching another high-school series. But that changes very very fast into a witty tv series that keeps surprising you. It will keep you on the edge of your seat trying to find clues for each major case that is a red line for each season (so they are busy with nr 3..but case 1 still lingers on).
The witty comments made by Veronica or others are funny..DAMN FUNNY! Not corny..they will make you laugh aloud. Ask my parents..they've asked again and again why me and my brother were laughing so loudly.

More on the Wire! HBO put up tracklistings for every episode so I don't have to scour (sp) through their boards. Will always check up Nora Lee's great site!!! Nora..great site lot's of good insight into The Wire, giving it the respect it deserves!! It's mainly an underground hit overhere. A shame!

More soundtrack reviews. I got a couple of soundtracks lying around. If people got ideas...I'm open to them. But being poor..I can't buy everything..(hmm maybe I should see if I can get this blog to be bigger so I get send soundtracks for free and review them. Getting free cd's , not having to download them, maaaaaaaaaaaaybe even getting paid for a hobby!!! It's always been a bit of a dream to get a (part-time) job that is really really a hobby. I'm not a music student or something, but I listen to a very broad range of music, so knowledge through experience I guess.
I can be a critic, but won't hack and slash music, 99% of the bands don't deserve that!! So anybody who can hook me up with anything--> APPRECIATED!!!

It's VERY hard for me to take a #1 so I'll make a list of cd's I like without things having to be in a particular order.

Nas - Illmatic (good oldskool rap)

Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory (hard music :D)

Manau - Panique Celtique (French band: most people only know La tribu de dana. but I like all their songs).

Nirvana - Nevermind (probably will still be listening when I'm 80)

Eminem - Slim Shady LP (funny and still raw)

Spinvis - Smalfilm (you'd probably have to know Dutch to find it attactive..very very weird lyrics in a poetic way on a sound of whatever sound the guy could find).

I decided to review the soundtracks which I posted about. So check the posts again (there aren't that many: weeds, lost, the wire).

Upcoming: Veronica Mars, Casshern (Japanese flick) and Godzilla and one of the Matrix OST's. But that might take a couple of days, because I don't want to flood my blog with too many posts. It's just that I've listened to these lately or that I have them in my possesion.

This series doesn't have an own soundtrack but there is plenty of music in all the episodes.

Comment:
I'm VERY sad that there isn't an official soundtrack to be found. Now people have to scavenge music from all over the place and even find out the artist & track names, which is a lot of work.
Every season has it's own version of 'Way down in the hole'. I liked the version of the Alabama blind boys best, because it gives it the raw souly sound to the series which describes the crime and the drama.
For the rest I haven't heard much of the music seperate from the series except the Greek song, which is a very funny song to listen to. I don't understand a single word, but it creates good music to the scene it was played in and it's a happy song (at least it sounds that way).

Overall the music was very diverse. Hardcore rap, soul, pop, rock and other stuff. It gave a grimey, dramatic and sometimes funny effect to the series. Very nice.
Let's give it a 7,5. Just because there is no real soundtrack and I haven't heard all that much when I didn't watch the series.

At the moment there's only one season with 10 episodes of 30 minutes. But it's darn worth it. And a 2nd season is coming up this summer. If you don't live in the USA (like me) the Torrent the series! GO GO GO ;)

How to describe this soundtrack? Plain funny! It's the perfect music for a tv series in suburbia. Especially 'little boxes' which describes the people who live in Agrestic (the town where the tv series is set). There are only a couple of artists which I knew before this OST. Michael Franti & Spearhead and Flogging Molly. You can listen these songs seperately or as a whole. It doesn't matter it's at least an 8!

So what can be said about this soundtrack? I think it is a REAL soundtrack. This means that the music really supports the series directly. It creates spheres of creepyness, haste, horror, secrecy, happyness, relieve. If you'd listen to this soundtrack at night, lights out, all alone..any normal person would get at least a bit uncomfortable. The titles aren't random funny titles (although the DID made me laugh), but they are all very well thought of because they support different scenes.

I think this soundtrack deserves an 8 or even a 9. It is, which is something I like, music that you wouldn't normally listen on the radio or would come in contact with.

After spitting through dozens of posts on a HBO The Wire forum I grew tired.
Nobody took the time to make a post to make a tracklisting of everything that was mentioned in the endless posts about music in The Wire.

The Wire doesn't have an official soundtrack (as far as I can find..and I did search).
As I've been a kind of a Tv series addict and I've been downloading (sorry..but I don't got enough money on me to buy every soundtrack I like for 22 euro's a piece!).
So I've been trying to round up tracklistings of soundtrack music to whatever series I like (that is..which I have seen!)

This is a welcoming post. I will make some other posts with tracklistings of different tv series. For The Wire there will be updates when I come across new info.
